"I've been informed that the New People's Army has been heavily involved in illegal logging activities," Ms Arroyo said in a speech at the 14th general assembly of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines at the Manila Hotel.

"The insurgents should not be allowed to plunder our forests to raise funds to undermine our democracy. This is a matter of ecological balance as well as national security," Ms Arroyo said in her speech before the LMP, the association of the country's 1,495 municipal mayors. [Inq7.net]

Eight soldiers on a rescue mission for victims of tropical storm “Winnie” were ambushed Tuesday by suspected communist guerillas in San Ildefonso town, Bulacan province, a Philippine Army spokesperson said.

"The soldiers were on their way to conduct rescue mission when ambushed by the communist rebels. This act is condemnable," Army spokesman Major Bartolome Bacarro said. [Inq7.net]

Meanwhile, communist rebel spokesman Gregorio “Ka Roger” Rosal pinned the blame on the government, which he said was allegedly “responsible for the destruction of our forests in the past years.”

“Logging, whether legal or illegal, exists because the government allows it from the environment department, the police, the military, and local government units,” Rosal said in a text message to INQ7.net when sought for his reaction on Arroyo’s statement.[Inq7.net]

"The 56th IB was never part of a rescue and relief operation, as
MalacaƱang, the DND and the AFP claim," said Rosal. He pointed
out that the mountainous area between San Ildefonso and San
Rafael, where the firefight took place, is a long distance away
from the calamity areas.

"To put it plainly: the November 30 encounter happened because
troops belonging to the 56th IBPA has been pursuing the fighters
of the NPA-Eastern Bulacan. In defense, the NPA put up a fight,
turning the tables around and coming out victorious," Rosal
added. [imc-qc]

"The illegal loggers are also in the mountains. They (CPP and NPA rebels) are collecting money from illegal loggers, otherwise the illegal loggers could not have survived," Major General Pedro Cabuay, the head of Solcom, told the Inquirer.

Jim Sampulna, director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Central Mindanao, said that Geronimo Sequito, a Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer (CENRO), reported that the policemen allegedly escorted the transport of hot lumbers in Lake Sebu town.

Sequito’s report identified one of the policemen as PO1 Loreto Malon. The latter's companion has remained unidentified but is believed to be also a policeman.

The two suspects, clad in civilian clothes and aboard a motorcycle, were reportedly escorting a truck loaded with 906 board feet of red lauan lumber valued at nearly P20,000 when Sequito and elements of the 27th Infantry Battalion Bravo Company headed by 2Lt. Eric Demaala intercepted them in sitio Siete, barangay Tasiman [mindanews.com]
.
